EPFO manages Provident Fund accounts for over 25 crore workers across India. Despite the scale, PF withdrawal claims — whether for full settlement, partial advance, or transfer between employers — frequently face unexplained delays that the member portal does not explain.

If your claim has been pending for weeks without movement, an RTI application filed with the relevant EPFO Regional Office is one of the most effective ways to get a concrete status and force accountability.

Under the Right to Information Act, 2005, EPFO is a public authority and is legally bound to respond within 30 days. Most applicants find that their claims get processed soon after the RTI acknowledgement — the act of filing creates an official paper trail that officers must act on.

What Can You Achieve with an RTI to EPFO?

  • Get the exact current status of your withdrawal or transfer claim with complete file movement history
  • Know the name and designation of the officer handling your claim — useful for direct follow-up
  • Find out why your claim is stuck — missing documents, bank account mismatch, pending KYC, verification hold
  • Obtain a copy of any deficiency notice or rejection memo if your claim was returned
  • Confirm the payment date and transaction reference if EPFO says the claim is settled but you haven't received the money
  • Track PF transfer delays between employers or between regional offices

Where to File: The Right Authority

EPFO operates through 135+ regional and sub-regional offices. You must file with the regional office that holds your PF account.

How to identify your regional office: The first letters of your PF account number encode your region. For example, MH/BAN/... means Maharashtra, Bangalore. Log in to the EPFO UAN Member Portal and check your passbook header.

File your RTI online at rtionline.gov.in — no need to visit the office in person. When selecting the authority, navigate to: Ministry of Labour and Employment → EPFO → Your Regional Office.

How to File: Step by Step

Step 1: Gather Your Details

Before writing your RTI, collect:

  • Your Universal Account Number (UAN)
  • Your PF Account Number (format: XX/XXX/XXXXX/XXX/XXXXXXX)
  • The claim reference number from the EPFO portal or the SMS you received
  • The date you submitted your claim

Step 2: Draft Your Application

Write specific questions — not vague requests. "Why is my claim delayed?" is less effective than "Provide the file movement details for claim reference XXX and the name of the officer currently holding the file." The sample draft below is ready to use with your details filled in.

Step 3: File on RTI Online Portal

  1. Visit rtionline.gov.in and register or log in
  2. Click Submit Request
  3. Select: Ministry of Labour and Employment → EPFO → Your Regional Office
  4. Paste your application text (limit: 3,000 characters)
  5. Optionally attach a screenshot of your EPFO portal showing your claim status

Step 4: Pay the Application Fee

Pay ₹10 online via net banking, debit/credit card, or UPI on the portal itself. BPL cardholders are exempt — attach a self-attested copy of your BPL card and select the BPL exemption option during filing.

Step 5: Track and Follow Up

After submission you'll receive a registration number (format: EPFOG/XXXXX/2026). Track the response at rtionline.gov.in.

If there is no response within 30 days, or the response is unsatisfactory, you may file a First Appeal under Section 19(1) of the RTI Act with the First Appellate Authority (FAA) at EPFO within 30 days of the date of the decision or the expiry of the 30-day response period, whichever is applicable. If the FAA also fails to respond or the response remains unsatisfactory, you may file a Second Appeal with the Central Information Commission (CIC) under Section 19(3) within 90 days of the FAA's decision or the date on which the decision should have been made.

What Specific Information Can You Ask For?

These are the most effective RTI questions to ask EPFO:

  1. Complete file movement history for claim reference XXX from the date of receipt to the present
  2. Name and designation of the officer currently holding my file
  3. Specific reason(s) for delay, with reference to any internal circular or instruction if applicable
  4. Whether any deficiency notice was issued — if yes, provide a certified copy
  5. Date payment was credited (if already processed) and the NEFT/UTR reference number
  6. Whether there is any discrepancy in KYC data or bank account details preventing settlement, and the exact nature of the discrepancy
