How to File RTI for Aadhaar Update or Enrollment Issues (UIDAI RTI Guide)
Step-by-step guide to file an RTI application with UIDAI for Aadhaar update delays, name or address correction rejections, and enrollment complaints. Includes a ready-to-use sample RTI draft.
Aadhaar is a 12-digit unique identity number issued by the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) under the Aadhaar (Targeted Delivery of Financial and Other Subsidies, Benefits and Services) Act, 2016. Over 135 crore Aadhaar numbers have been issued, and updates — whether for name, address, date of birth, or mobile number — are a routine but frequently delayed process.
UIDAI is a statutory authority established under the Aadhaar Act and is a public authority under Section 2(h) of the RTI Act, 2005. Citizens can file RTI applications to seek information about their own Aadhaar update status, the reasons for rejection of update requests, and UIDAI's internal timelines and procedures.
Important note: An RTI application filed with UIDAI can seek information about UIDAI's actions, decisions, and procedures related to your own request. It cannot be used to obtain another person's Aadhaar details or biometric data, which are protected under Section 28 of the Aadhaar Act and Section 8(1)(j) of the RTI Act.
What Can You Achieve with an RTI to UIDAI?
- Get the current processing status of your Aadhaar update request using your URN (Update Request Number)
- Know the specific reason your update was rejected, with reference to the applicable UIDAI guideline
- Confirm whether your supporting documents were received in full and whether any document was found deficient
- Get the standard processing timeline (SLA) for your category of update and why it has not been met
- Know the name and designation of the processing unit or officer responsible for your request
- Get information about UIDAI's internal procedures for handling particular types of requests
